WHAT PASSES FOR PEACE IN ALEPPO

by Cally Conan-Davies

In the war, the play goes on

underground

brother and sister rolled and buried

underground

up above, a gutted building

underground

sacks of jumping children

underground

the dead are staying dead

underground

the war is overhead

underground

is the safest, deepest place

underground

no sound is a dropping sound

(and this is when the courtyard suddenly thunders.)
